Nils Melzer Stepping Down

Nils Melzer UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Its devastating to learn that UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment is stepping down in March 2022, a few months to soon before his scheduled departure in September 2022. Mr Melzer announced that his sudden departure was due to over lapping jobs and conflict of interest. Mr Melzer had been instrumental in highlighting Julian Assange ill-treatment and illegal incarceration at the Ecador embassy by the British government, as well as working with notable Targeted Individuals like Magnus Olsson of the European Coalition against Covert Harrassment to highlight the plight of Targeted Individuals and their targeting issues. Within the Targeted Individuals community, Mr Melzer had gained popularity due to his stance on cybertorture issues, asking governments to investigate individuals compaints of torture. Mr Melzer will be missed. We hope the new Rapporteur will be equally dedicated to Targeted Individuals issues.

Personal Writer’s Note : I had hoped to meet Mr Melzer personally one day ato raise awareness of the issues raised in our Petition as he was one of the receipt of Gobal Petition here . Unfortunately we now have to go the new Rapporteur who we hope is equally dedicated or better. We wish Mr Melzer all the success in his new job.
